![]() ![]() I would like to thank Valancourt Books for providing a free audio download of THE REAPING in exchange for a fair and honest review. Hannibal Hills narration is excellent and easy to understand. Another excellent addition to Valancourt Books' Paperbacks From Hell series. The horror is a very slow build, but once all the pieces of the puzzle start falling into place, the story takes a rapid chase to its chilling and unexpected end. Some plot points seem too contrived for necessity, but the twists and turns will keep the reader guessing. Whether of wealth, the flesh, or youth, seduction is at the core of this book. Soon, to his horror, Rigby discovers that the commission for the portrait and all that he observed at the manor were all part of a diabolical plot, and that his was a small but integral part in a much larger, more sinister scheme. ![]() ![]() However, during his stay at the mansion, Rigby observes more and more distressing goings-on, and is more than happy to have his leave of the mansion at the completion of the portrait. Rigby soon finds himself romantically involved with the subject of the portrait, a young relative of the owner of Woolvercombe House. At first reticent, the money offered is too lucrative for Rigby to turn down. Tom Rigby, former artist-turned-shop owner, is commissioned to paint a portrait in a secluded country mansion. Bernard Taylor's THE REAPING is an unsettling Gothic tale of seduction, and the myriad ways that seduction can be used against a person. ![]() ![]() Sorry I'm Late, I Didn't Want to Come follows Jess's hilarious and painful year of misadventures in extroverting, reporting back from the frontlines for all the introverts out there.īut is life actually better or easier for the extroverts? It’s not that his recipe was particularly revolutionary. ![]() Last week, I cracked open the Christmanukkah present I got from Craig’s parents–Thomas Keller’s Ad Hoc at Home (thanks Julee and Steve!)–and decided to plunge in with the most alluring recipe I encountered on first flip-through: the roast chicken. That recipe comes from the Chez Panisse cookbook and no matter how many other roast chicken recipes I try–the River Cottage one, for example–no chicken has been able to unseat the Chez Panisse chicken. For me, that’s a combination of fennel seeds, cayenne pepper, and kosher salt on the outside of the skin and thyme stuffed inside (see here). Roasting a chicken is a very personal thing those of us who are regular chicken roasters (and, in the winter, roasting a chicken is almost a weekly act for me) know what we like. ![]() ![]() From true crime books to espionage odysseys (of course, including whodunnit riddles) here are the 30 best mystery books that you cannot miss out on if you’re looking for twisted stories to keep you on the edge of your seat. The True Adventures of Charley Darwin is unusual in that it breaks from Meyer"s formula of always having a female narrator, as Charley narrates his own story. ![]() Her previous published work was The True Adventures of Charley Darwin, focusing on the life of Charles Darwin, quite a leap from her usual subjects, for she has gone from royalty, to European artists, and now to scientists. Are the configurations on the screen, the patterns of light and dark, the flowing presence and absence of people and objects, an image? Can this plurality and heterogeneity be reduced to the singular? Should it be? The concrete image can then become like a word or like a text. Underlying this approach is the search for the visible. It is to elevate image to the level of a category. To speak of the image is often to speak of an object with a set of specific boundaries. (See pages 120-126 of Cultures of Vision) But, it is my contention and it was also Roland Barthes central concern later in his career, that we don’t read images as we might read words on a page. One of the great difficulties which results is that we tend to approach the interpretation of media images as if they can in a literal sense be read.
